This was too big an event to be just a post.
February 2006
Before:

It was a lazy Saturday morning in February 2006. I was in the shower when Hunter came in all jolly. The shower walls were fogged over so I couldn’t see real well, but I could tell that something with her hair wasn’t quite right. I said, “Hunter, what did you do to your hair?”

“I cut it!” she replied enthusiastically.
My chest was heavy, my lungs burned, and I all of a sudden, I couldn’t breathe. Panic set in. “What?!” I hopped out of the shower, not even bothering to grab a towel.

“I cut it!” she said again joyfully.

“What?! What did you do?” But by then, I could tell that indeed she’d given herself a horrendous mullet!!

The tears were starting up, mine, not hers. She was on cloud nine. I was still in shock. “Show me!”
In the office, there it was; a pile of her beautiful brown locks.

I still couldn’t breath.
Her once shiny, thick, enviable hair, was now just a heap of mess on my office table. I cried.
She didn’t really seem to understand the magnitude of what she’d just done. My fairy princess what now a mullet head! Ugh! I wanted to scream. After finally putting some clothes on, I called everyone that I knew that might be able to fix it. However, no one had an opening in their schedule. I’d cut hair before, but nothing like this. But I had no options left (leaving it was entirely out of the question!)
She’d cut her hair to the scalp in some places, but I did the best I could with what I had to work with. All in all, it didn’t turn out too bad. She was in heaven and absolutely loved her new haircut. Where once stood my quiet, demure, peaceful little girl with her long, beautiful brown hair, was now a hyper, boisterous, crazed little pixie. I figured it was a phase that would soon pass when she got used to her new do. I thought eventually my sweet, little Hunter would come back. But that day, she left and we had a new lively Hunter. It was like all that hair had weighed her down and her haircut had liberated her. She was never the same. However, I wouldn’t trade her. She is quite something!!
